KathieB
I've learned to look for the glazed eyes. At first hint, I change the subject.
Audra
I gave up on sharing. Occasionaly it slips at work when I find something awesome. One of my twins (11 year old son) is my biggest helper/critic/adivise giver. I'll just stick to him.
uppitycats
I live a pretty isolated life, so this isn't a problem. My husband tunes me out (just as I tune him out when he starts prattling on about his hobbies), the one friend that occasionally comes by is vaguely interested so always comes in to the craft room to "see what's new"...and otherwise, it's just me and my four cats, only one of which is interested. You could always be aloof -- wait until they ask you what you're up to -- and then say casually, "oh, I just finished putting up the walls on my...." or whatever project you're in the middle of. If they're interested, they'll ask. If not, then excuse yourself..."...the glue should be just about dry now, so I can move on to the next step...."
ilovecats
I usually don't talk to others about my mini's. I get eye rolls, glazed expressions. I had a coworker look at me in disgust and in a rude tone tell me what a WASTE of time and money. Noone brings it up either so obviously they aren't interested. I talk to Andrew about it, but not much.
heidiiiii
Yup..the glazed over look is very common. I only share when it is something really cool. Like when I painted that oil painting in the class in Sturbridge. They were all excited. The only other time I share is when I want opinions on paint sample colors. It is good to get 3 different opinions from the same household. If they are all the same opinion..I either ignore them or take their advice..LOL
PATBIDLACK
I live in a senior citizen development. There are a few that are interested around here but most of them are probably wondering if I am senile. LOL which is fine because then I won't ever be re-elected to the association board. I already served 12 years and trust me thats enough. B)
othercate
Oh good heavens yes...people think I'm right off my rocker. And those who are closest to me are the most patient - but you can see when it's wearing thin. Occasionally something wonderful happens - like when I showed my Alice scene to my brother-in-law and he was speechless. He couldn't fathom that I'd made that...made everything in that! He'd never seen anything like it before and could barely process it. It was wonderful!
More Minis Dollhouses
I never talk about my minis to others. My husband likes to talk about them but not about design or anything like that but about how I can make money off of them. So typical. Hes always scheming some idea up about how I can "market" them. He doesnt get it that I just want them all for myself. My sister and friend love talking about them but they dont really understand because their not into minis. Since I live pretty much isolated Ive learned to talk to myself. lol I debate with myself how the next house will be and what to do with it. Its just as fun as talking to someone else about it and even more so because I always agree with myself...
Just One More
Even on the forum I try not to post everything I do. Others are doing the same thing and unless it's a really new idea to share or a question, I try to just wait until I think it's something that will be interesting to read. It's disappointing to find your post at the bottom of page three with maybe two replys by the end of the day. It's hard not get excited about things sometimes but I keep a lot to myself about minis. Wolfie
The glazed, yawning, sleeping look is my clue.......I don't say a word until someone asks me.........
Missymew
Missymew is fine with me talking about my dollhouses and miniatures as long as I'm happy or content. She purrs and watches me with her beautiful eyes half-closed. However, if I do go on too long, she does like to nibble on a tasty treat while I continue. -Susanne
pin1056
yes yes the glazed look No one in my family understands the drama, euphoria or the disappointments of it all so i shut up and continue talking to myself...i'm happy so whats the problem I get my pleasure from catching them with head down, bum up looking into the houses when they think i'm not around I chat dollhouses all day online to Debra from the forum and we totally understand eachother ....it's fine, i'll survive....my name is Linda and i am a dollhouseaholic
Tess11
This is so timely! I was just told by my manager on Friday not to talk about dollhouses or my blog because they seem to think it's interfering with my work. Apparently they can tell me what to do with my free time now too. You have to watch every word you say there. I made the mistake of being excited over some things I did and shared the pictures on my blog with the wrong people. They take every word you say in such a strange way. I'm so excited I found a dollhouse on Craig's List equates to I've been playing on the Internet all day instead of working- never mind that I found it at home on my own time. Management always takes it in the negative and looks for what you are doing wrong. It's funny because I built a dollhouse for one of the managers last year and it was OK to talk about it then, because they wanted something. I've learned my lesson. I won't talk about it again. THmini2
i have been pretty lucky as most have asked to see pictures. But I do know who not to mention them to as they are people that never like anything different. My mom says it's nice that Jeff and I have something to work on together. But I don't think that she likes the cost of it. I had to tell her that I hardly ever buy anything at full price. ( I don't get to the miniature store to often, or it might be a differnt story lol). I use coupons alot at Hobby Lobby and HBS. Also Manor House has good prices at alot of their items.
Deb
I talk to people about it all the time and have learned to completely ignore any eye rolling. In fact, if I catch a sign of "is she crazy or what" in their expression, I'll deliberately lay it on thicker. Of course, I've always done that no matter what the topic is just because I like to mess with people who cop attitudes. <cackle> Try telling people that you gave up a corporate career to build dollhouses and see what kind of a reaction you get. hehehehehe When I was working, I always had needlework at hand and would embroider or bead while I was talking on the phone, so my co-workers were used to the "eccentric artist" thing. When I'd share my website with them, most of them thought the houses were pretty cool. I've always found it interesting that men are more fascinated with my dollhouses than women when they find out I build them myself. Overall, I have to say that most people who know me like my houses and are interested in them. When Bruce's friends come over, the first place they go is to my studio to see what I'm working on. I'll chatter about minis with family and friends and while I try not to monopolize the conversation, I don't shy away from telling them what I'm up to. Bruce lets me bounce ideas off of him and is interested in whatever I'm working on. Now that I think about it, Napoleon is the only one who isn't really interested. That's okay coz I'm not into chasing catnip mice so we just agree to have different hobbies. Deb
chattycathy66
I try to refer to things as my "miniatures" .... I have had people at work look at me strange and say, "you're building what??" I keep minis pretty much to myself too...too bad friends don't see it's a hobby, just like something they do...salt -water fish, cross stich...golf... DH is pretty supportive since I have been so busy working lately, I don't have time for housework, much less dollhouses, lol. Of course, he hasn't seen the huge stash of accessories I've been building... Lily Sweetbriar's vintage cottage and Sweet shop is just around the corner...lol
kellee
OH yea.! I dont speak much about them anymore..... I always get taht look too.. and then my friends will say "when are you going to sell them ?" Ii just quite bothering people with the things that make me happy. But I am great at getting to them as well.. if they start talking about something they are doing then I will ask them when they are going to sell their stuff... really gets to my one friend.. She will come up with an excuse and then I say well.. I like that excuse I guess I'll borrow it for my dollhouses.! I have been known to tell people to mind thier own Business, if they dont like my houses then DONT come over.!! My houses are something I love and are not going anywhere... and heck they dont steal, lie or stab you in the back.! Hugs, Kellee
Deb
We need t-shirts that say, "Love me, love my dollhouse". Cathy, I use the same terminology when talking to people who aren't familiar with our little world. I find that telling them I build 1:12 scale replicas of real houses is easier for them to understand. Of course, sometimes I get a blank look when the person doesn't understand and have to tell them, "You know..........dollhouses." I want one! about, "I live in my own little world, but it's OK. They know me there." I think I read something similar recently, but I love it! redneck princess
Ok, now I'm really thinking about this.....let me come up with a few designs and I will post them...annie I'm definitely interested! I'm lucky that my best friend is the one that got me into this, I chat her ear off all the time! My DH is actually a good listener...at times. I have learned over time who to talk to and who not to. Although I did get a little ego boost when my DH's family was all in the area a couple of weeks ago. I told them about my new hobby (obsession). They first asked if I sold them, what was I going to do with them, etc. the usual. I had my digital camera with me and showed them some pictures and they were actually impressed at what I'd done. Made me feel so good! Good thing they don't know what an amature (sp?) I am.
