Livinginthepast
Obviously not too serious secrets or it wouldn't be a real secret. Secretly? I would love to make miniatures as a full time job. Have a really popular online shop somehow, that I have funds to advertise in the magazines, and do fairs/shows. I could use my teaching abilities to run really good workshops, and I'd like to reach out to younger people and try and 'convert' them. I could also do crafts with the elderly in nursing homes or something, and other crafts that are sort of like miniatures but perhaps not for dollhouses, with people who aren't miniaturists, to make a living. I could make a museum or something full of dollhouse miniatures which might bring in some tourism to the area, plus help with my wages. :thumb: I could go to schools and help them with scale work for Maths/Design and Technology/English. It'd be awesome. I highly doubt I'll ever be able to do that because I think I'll just end up being a teacher. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I love the thought of being a teacher! But it'd be nice to do all that sort of thing too. Another 'secret' is that I would like to make some naughty/rude/weird miniatures, but I'm afraid of what my parents will think, or if parents will freak out when I become a teacher, if they find my shop via coincidentally going to a miniatures fair and picking up my card to see what Miss [Name] does. I don't do drugs at ALL but I just think it'd be hilarious to make miniature drug related paraphernalia, or things for miniature bordellos or miniature naughty magazines. I don't even *go* to those or use those things myself, I just LOVE having weird things in houses that's all. *sigh*. For the teenage boy's or girl's bedroom, or for the bachelor pad or university themed dollhouse... What are your miniature related secrets? CatColorado
Mine is pretty simple, I'd like to be able to sell a few of the miniatures I make. Nothing grand, just make one or two extra of whatever I make and find a good home for them. Maybe I will someday, hard to say.
rbytsdy
I was just thinking the other day how fun it would be to run a workshop, demonstrating a Buttercup build (or something simple like that)-- I would do alot of prep work for the "students" ahead of time, including sanding all the big pieces and printing out all sorts of wallpapers... We'd use embossed paper for the ceilings and we'd plank our own floors; we'd even paperclay our foundations and do some gardening. I wouldn't be "teaching" so much as coordinating the builds. I guess it might help if I would actually build a Buttercup first though! (Yep, I even had fun thinking about it...! But I am seriously thinking of building a Buttercup.) Kitten
Other than the occasional new house that I keep well hidden from hubby, I don't have any! :thumb:
woodland_miniatures
Oh, my, "naughty/weird" things - at one time I did make a catnip toy shaped like a marijuana leaf for friends, but hadn't thought to try it in mini scale. Hmmmm....also once made up a batch of knit "willy warmers" for groomsmen's gifts - really don't think that would work in mini, but who knows? I've always wanted to try making some naughty lacy lingerie in mini, exactly the kind of things you'd find in a bordello!! (My mom isn't around anymore to be shocked, though I suppose she could look down from where she is now and see what I'm up to - she'd probably laugh her head off!) Windsor
In a way i have always kind of daydreamed about being a full time miniaturist! If i had a garage I would easy spend $1000 on tools to build some high end miniatures! (so maybe its a good thing i dont have a garage :thumb: ) I have already bookmarked all the places to buy these tools.......someday!
Livinginthepast
I'm just wondering right now if I'd even be allowed to sell adult themed miniatures at the dollhouse fair where children could see it, or even just have them in my online shop where children might pick up my card at the fair (which would be PG rated) and then see the adult stuff in the shop... hmn. :S Maybe I'm just dying for someone to dare me to make some adult themed things for a private sale! I guess I could always do that.
havanaholly
I've not made it a secret that all my dolls are anatomically correct full-body sculpts.
woodland_miniatures
GASP!! Holly, you mean they aren't eunochs like poor Ken was??? Shocking!!! :o :thumb:
Violet2Dawn
Red Light District....build and ladies are still G rated, yet highly suggestive......it is possible! And I would not be ashamed or embarrassed to sell any of it at a fair.
Gee
livinginthepast, my daughter is collecting to make a sado masochism chamber in 1:12. she bought a leather whip, handcuffs, naughty clothing, leather masks, and is searching for more items. i as her mother think it is a great idea. would anyone be offended if you sold items like these (or the ones you mentioned)? come on, this is 2010... kids find more offending stuff on the internet than you could ever make. if i were you (which i'm not, obviously :thumb: ) i would go for it and try to make some things and sell it through a home-page. i bet you it is going to be a big hit. pdlnpeabody
I guess it isn't a secret that I want to make extremely high-end dollhouses and make a small fortune selling them.
Livinginthepast
... I want to make mini p*** magazines and vib**tors lol. I think that someone at the fair would be offended by that. unfortunately. :thumb: Well maybe not by the magazine since I can just have a lady in lingerie on the front or a photo of a naked doll! I've got an Etsy shop, the problem was parents of the kids I might be teaching finding the website. Unless I make a separate site for the adult stuff and don't promote it at the fair or something. hmn. Well, maybe one day! Or it can all be kept private. If your daughter's ever looking for something I'd be rather thrilled to make it though because then I won't have to go very public with it! Another secret: I'm pretty afraid that I'll never get my house past a shell. :o
Audra
that is great! ya know, if we are trying to do real life, than the little secrets we have in our closet that people don't see, should also apply for our mini version of what we build. Little bottle of viagra in the medicine cabinet??
Livinginthepast
Okay I'm so gonna make that now. :thumb: I agree. I like putting things like that into scenes. It's not 'naughty' but when I made the housekeeper's bedroom we put a box of chocolates under her pillow as if she'd been interrupted.
Audra
I like the chocolate idea. Naughty is different to everyone - in my Grandma's house I should make a little ashtray and cigs in her craft room - she would go up there and sneak a smoke
CheckMouse
You could make the closet at the edge of the house, so there's a cutaway view of it. The door into the room would be discreetly closed, but "we" could see all kinds of things stashed in the closet to show this household had some deep secrets :o My "secret" desire would be to make a living selling miniatures. I think people who work at Greenleaf and RGT have really great jobs. I've never wanted to live in Germany but think of the 'dream job' of working at that massive miniature display they have in Hamburg. I'd also like to create a crime scene in miniature -- but not with the intent of ones on CSI, which were built to show the crime that the builder was about to commit! To get the details on blood spatters, :thumb: etc would be fun to create.

I was thinking an old western type one... but I think it might be more modern... I dont know.!! If you were to make and sell the Naughty stuff.... put it under a made up name or alias that is only for that stuff... or make it so that they would have to click a button on your website that states they are 18. havanaholly
Not all of us want to turn pro! This is my hobby, my creative outlet and my therapy to keep me sane; and that's no secret!
kawinkle
Me secret? Just like everyone I want to build miniatures. Hubby has given me the all clear to order and build 1/4 scale houses. However, I don't know where I would sell them once they are done or for how much. My intent is to finish them fully and have them set up for display. Also allowing for custom orders where I can. Was thinking of selling them on Etsy since I have an account to sell my phone dangles and such already (which I haven't sold in a while either). Speaking of which, I need to probably pay my bill on there sigh. Anyways, my secert is to sell little houses on the side. I really like my full time job but I would love to have extra income on the side made doing something I love doing! Sweet bliss! LOL
Livinginthepast
Unfortunately that'd mean I couldn't sell on Etsy anymore- because we have to declare that we have two shops and link to each other from both shops. Hmn. Maybe I could find some other way to do it.
kawinkle
I don't have my dollhouses on etsy. I only have phone dangles that are no longer active postings.
kawinkle
What do you mean we have to declare and link to? I know nothing about etsy except the small dealings I had with my dangles. I don't want to interfere with anything anyone else has set up already! Etsy was just an idea since I had my shop open already.
Debra from Olde Cape Cod
I guess I feel the same as Holly. Once your miniatures become your job, you might not feel the same about it. I would like to be able to sell something I already made and didn't have a place for but selling anything right now has become a challenge.
