Hi everyone. I'm about half way thru my first dollhouse (the Orchid). I'm already looking around for my next one so I think I have the bug. This has been so much fun even tho when I first saw the directions I had second thoughts. Once I sat down and studied them it made more sense. I am having trouble trying to figure out how to hinge the door so I can open and close it. The weather here is below 0 temps so it's great to stay in and work on this project.

Thanks,

Robin

Hi and welcome! If you loook in the blogs there are some different ways to hinge doors. There is always hinges, and pins, and a fabric hinge. If you have the door already put together or the outer trim already on I discovered a way to pin hinge after the house is built. Let me know if you want the info.

You will need a scap piece of wood cut to fit the opening floor. You will also need two pieces of sturdy wire about 1/4 inch long. You will need to sand or cut down the door ( take from the bottom) so it fits loosly with the sil ( scrap piece) in place. Do not glue. Finish the sil ( paint, stain whatever) and the bottom of the door. Push the wire into the door one at the top and one at the bottom ( the skinny sides) near the corners and then into the sil. Make a hole in the top of the doorway to match the door. Put a small line of glue across the opening for the door. With the sil on the bottom of the door slide the pin sticking out of the top of the door into the whole in the top of the door way and push the door into place. You can then wipe any glue that is around the sil.

Test fit everything before you glue. I may be able to get some pics if you need just let me know. I do have pics of the finished door in my Tennyson gallery if you to take a look.

Welcome to the group, Robin! I'm your neighbor to the NW in frozen South Dakota. It's great to know that there are mini people somewhat close to me!!

Thanks to everyone for being so nice and friendly.

I'm going to try the hinge tomorrow or tonight when I get up. I'm working graveyard shift this week so I sleep a lot. Did you come up with the idea yourself? It sounds like I can do it.

I live in Ft. Dodge. It's about 1 1/2 hrs north of Des Moines. I'd like to find a miniature store in Ames or Des Moines but I haven't looked yet. We have Hobby Lobby here but they don't have very much.

My second project will definately be the travel trailer. I saw it today on a website and I love it. There's just something about it...... As far as a house, I haven't decided yet. Any suggestions???

Thanks again everybody

Robin

 to the "little" family, Robin.

I'm already looking around for my next one so I think I have the bug.

It's actually an incurable addiction & thinking about your second (& third) kit is a symptom that it has hit you HARD!

I just finished an Orchid as a general store, I'm finishing up wigging the dolls who will live in it. You can read how I did it and I have pictures how I hinge doors. I used twill tape, but I prefer chamois, and I really detailed

how I hinge windows & doors in my Glencroft blog.
