mollymmoore
Hello All, I have a mini project book that calls for obechi sheet wood. It is a british book, so I suppose this is a british term for something like balsa or bass wood. Does anyone know what we call this in the US? Thanks, Molly
kat57
One quick Google says it's also called African Maple and is used on finger boards of guitars....Just Google "What is Obechi wood"? ...I don't do links, but you'll find it that way! mollymmoore
Oh, okay. I don't think I have ever seen that in Michael's or Hobby Lobby, so basswood will probably have to do. Thanks!

Basswood is a good choice and it's readily available. From what I found when I googled the other wood it appears that it may be endangered. havanaholly
Basswood is better for making mini furniture than balsa; balsa is very soft and splintery. I do believe that obechi is similar to basswood.
WyckedWood
I think I have the same book Molly...is it Finishing Touches? Well, anyway I substituted basswood and it worked beautifully.
