Sugarplum Cottage becomes Monarch Butterfly Cottage

Now that I'm somewhat settled in my new digs (and loving it), I've begun a new project. Click on my blog link below to see it. I'm putting in some basics, as some of my new friends here have expressed interest in the process.

My favorite monarch story is about their caterpillars.  On the way home from visiting our married son outside DC we stopped and camped in Elkin, WV, and took the train ride to the top of a nearby mountain where several of the passengers were to take another train down the other side to another town.  While waiting for the other train we all disembarked to walk and stretch our legs on the mountain top, where there was a field of wildflowers. Of course I couldn't resist and the hubs and I went to check it out; it was a mountaintop full of milkweed in bloom, and nearly every plant had a fat, glorious monarch caterpillar chewing away.  Being me, I whooped, "Look at all these gorgeous monarch caterpillars!" and everyone from the train came over to join us in looking and admiring.  Knowing their other stages of metamorphosis are just as beautiful is just as awe-inspiring.

Nope. It doesn’t show that for me for some reason. Maybe because I’m using my phone?

I love the contact paper idea, Kathy! It looks great! I'm not sure if you know, but your blog comments are set to be approved before they publish. I've left comments, but they don't ever seem to show up. Are you being notified on an old email address? You're in my blog roll, and I bet I am not the only one seeing your progress and wanting to comment.

Thanks for the heads-up ... I'll check this out.

Yikes! There were a couple hundred comments awaiting confirmation. Most of them were spam, but they're all cleaned up now. I've added my email address for notification of new comments, so hopefully I can keep up. Thanks again, Jodi.

Your "fieldstones" look awesome!  I did brick infill on my pub because it was a pub and The spaces between the timbers were so tall; yours are clofer together, so I think the plastered fill looks just fine for a little cottage.  Has it told you yet whether its roof wants slates or thatch?

The roof says it wants a generous amount of moss but is so far remaining silent as to what material it would like as a base. The kit comes with shingles, which may be the most practical option.

Yes! This is going to be so charming......the chimney will need some too.

The last Buttercup I built I also bashed a chimney onto and the house decided it wanted moss on the roof and chimney.  It also wanted a corrugated tin roof.  As soon as one of my coworkers saw it she snapped it up for her grandchild.

The exterior is coming along nicely.

Am wavering over the color for the porch and benches. Paint the benches and base the same color, or should the base be a different color -- or should it be stone?

:hmm: Where did that stone thing come from? I sure didn't set myself up for extra work! I didn't think it, but my fingers typed it. This house has me in its spell! 😧

Since it's a monarch cottage, perhaps paint the benches a milkweed green with pale pinkish edges; or in stripes of white, gold and black, like the caterpillar.  If not stone, what about sprinkling builder's sand over another primer coat on the base?  Maybe some of your moss and a few wee flowers here and there.

I'm leaning toward medium green benches with maybe darker green paint for the base.
