Spice rack

otterine

I wanted a wall mounted spice rack, but I wasn't sure how to go about making the little spice jars to go in it. I ended up using 3/16" diameter rigid aquarium tubing for the jars and 3/16" diameter wooden beads for the caps. I painted part of the inside with colors matching the various spices I wanted to mimic. I created labels in Word using clip art borders for the design and printed them on Avery label paper since I figured I'd get more glue on myself than on the tiny labels if I tried applying an adhesive after cutting them out. The labels measure 1/4" square. I built a spice rack out of basswood and mini dowels, leaving it unfinished for now since I like the color. I will likely seal it but not paint it. Here you can also see the finished backsplash; I used two light coats of metallic silver paint that I wiped off before drying to create variegated shades of silver. More photos of the process on my blog.

You have not just been an inspiration, you have been a major influence on my project. I was asked by my niece if I would be interested in fixing up a dollhouse for her daughter. I don't think I even blinked before answering! My husband and I work on a model railroad, HO Scale, and I have really enjoyed that. But my background is artist, interior design, and crack engineer. So, each of those buildings on the railroad layout all have unique window coverings, some have rooftop gardens, and, I even fashioned the waterfall and, a beaver dam complete with HO scale beavers that I hand carved from, seriously, a twig. Until I saw your work, I figured this dollhouse would be a typical Victorian rendition, because that's what people do. But, no, there is a different perspective! This old Duracraft Victorian Mansion 600, is being renovated, remodeled, and getting new life, just as many old homes in real life have, a designers touch, in miniature. Thank you, so much, for all the info, detailed info, that you are so great at posting and so many of your steps along the way. I love your work.
