Probably a Dumb Question

Ok what I would like to know is. If you decided not to wallpaper your walls and want to paint them do you just paint over the wood? Or do you put something on them first to cover the grain?

I have been looking and looking at pictures on the gallery and I can't tell for sure.

We have just painted over the wood in the rooms we are not papering.. RayAnne likes the grain to show through which is fine it is her house. But I was just wondering if others do it like that.

I paint on the wood

I also prime first...it saves on the paint

primering keeps the wood from soaking up paint and gives a smoother finish

oh and BTW

there is NO such thing as a dumb question!

nutti :)

If I don't want the grain to show I use either spackle to cover the wall and smooth it out to give it a smooth plaster type finish then I'll paint over that. You can also texture the spackle so it looks more like stucco or a rougher spanish style stucco or hand plastered look.

Oh.. and that's not a dumb question at all :) I really don't like the wood grain showing under my paint. :p

I prime everything first. It gives a 'clean' finish to the paint and is also better when wallpapering for later wallpaper removal, as I am so apt to do! :(

However, there's nothing wrong with letting the grain show through the paint if that's what you like! :o
