The tin roof was made from corrugated paper available in craft shops. This was the stuff intended for kids, in bright colours not the expensive stuff that paper crafters use. I cut it into sheets of 2" x 4" which I guessed was a fair approximation of the real stuff used for roofs (they are probably 3 x 6 in reality though). The paper was originally bright yellow, bright blue and gold so I sprayed it with grey primer to begin with then painted it with silver acrylic paint, not too carefully so that bits of grey primer showed through in places. Then I painted it with a mixture of red, yellow ochre, burnt umber and black acrylic paint to look like parts were rusty. I also bent a few pieces so that creases were visible and I concentrated the rust in these areas.. After that I took about half of the sheets and burnt the edges with a match so that they were ragged. The burning made the paint bubble slightly in places which was perfect for a rusty finish. After that it was stuck to the roof, washed with a watery black wash concentrating on the areas underneath where the pieces overlapped. Finally I used an outline paint used for making the lead edges on faux leaded glass and just made blobs along where the nails would go. Unfortunately the only colour paint I had was gold so these looked very silly until they dried hard as raised blobs and I painted them all black.
