March 13 update: porch shingles and electricity

denkyem

Here she is today -- with porch shingles starting to go on. You can also see the porch lights glowing -- This week I installed my first dollhouse electricity! I'd always planned for one hanging porch light, and I realized that once the porch roof went on, it would be impossible to install a light in the porch ceiling. So I put this one in before gluing on the roof, and added on the little coach light at the front door because I happened to have it around.

For the porch, I'm shingling with tacky glue. I may switch to a solvent-based glue when I get to the steeper slopes of the roof. The shingles have been dyed with Real Good Toys' own shingle dye in grey. I've seen mixed reviews of this product, but am delighted with the results. The variation from shingle to shingle is lovely, and these have a lovely silvery sheen to them as well.

Looks great!. How did you color your shingles?

Thanks! I used the RGT shingle dye in grey, in a fairly concentrated solution.  It gives quite varied results and I'm going to re-dye a few of the lighter ones, but I'm quite happy with the result.

Love the color scheme you have chosen, especially the red door.  The lattice work on the porch is a really nice feature.

That lattice was a PITA to assemble, so i'm pretty pleased you noticed it :). Thanks! I do love blue houses.
