havanaholly
I remember the lady (Sclerise, whose site has been long gone, alas!) who had the how-to for making a murphy bed from a Michael's hutch also had the directions for how she fudged stairs in her Dura-Craft San Franciscan where there wasn't really room; she installed the front half of a Houseworks interior door on a wall with an in-scale picture of the foot of stairs behind it. I have seen fake bathrooms done the same way.
BigC
I have seen something along the lines of an open or semi ajar door or ornate archway leading to a small back box, with a picture pasted on its back wall of the starting of a stairwell...needs investigating further for blending purposes especially on the next floors up...Not overly keen but if it works it may be be worth looking at. Or something like the image below (returned) and make the staircase a smidge narrower, perhaps two and a half inch instead of three...
