I didn't know what else to call it - my grandma did this when I was very little. In her purse, at all times, she carried around a little make-up bag. In it, she had a measuring tape, fabric and paint samples, pen & paper, photos, etc. She used to say you never know when you'll find something you need/want/like. Do any of you do this?

Hi Robin,

Your Grandmother sounds like a wise woman :( I try to carry a measuring tape with me every weekend when I hit the yard sales around town - unfortunately I didn't think to write down all the measurments of everything first. I've missed a couple of really nice looking interior doors because I didn't have my door measurements. Most things I can eyeball to see if they'll fit but I find that measuring tape really comes in handy for somethings- especially when I was looking for curtains - my windows are odd sizes (at least I think they are) I don't carry swatches of anything - I sort of like bohemian decorating so as long as the colors can co-exist with what I have they don't really need to match exactly. But you just can't beat having a measuring tape. And actually I use it most often when looking for bits to make minis out of to see if they'll work as parts in scale. :o

I carry one of those little "fat" 3"X5" spiral notebooks which I keep a list of projects, items needed, bought, tiny samples of paper, paint, etc clipped to the Project page and a list of books I have in my library along with a small measuring tape. It fits into my purse nicely and really helps me keep track of things especially when I go to shows. I bought too many duplicates or triplicates over the years (I start gathering stuff well ahead of starting projects) and found this actually saved me money. I am not really that organized anywhere else in my life! lol

When I go out, if it doesn't fit in my jeans pocket, it doesn't come along. I literally bring my keys, license and a credit card, and that's it. The other day I was out and saw some neat upholstery fabric, but I wasn't sure if it would match with my colors. Perhaps at this point in my life I need to start carrying a bag of some sort with me. Ugh.

Hang in there, Susan! I gave up carrying a purse about ten years ago. If it doesn't fit in my pockets, it doesn't go with me!

Hmmm ... "gave up" sounds like a sacrifice ... actually, it was rather liberating!

If I have to haul something -- like a book to read if I know I have to wait someplace, or a bottle of water if I'm going to be out a while -- I have a couple of small, lightweight canvas bags that I use.
