Let's build a box!
This past week, I was able to make some headway on the HBS contest kit. I've made some cuts, did lots of math, started one of the more challenging elements, but I needed to get the base constructed before I could go further.
I went to Home Depot, and the nice man in the lumber section helped me by cutting all the boards I needed. I have a 3/8" thick board for the top and a 1/4" thick board for the bottom. The side and interior supports are cut from a 1x4.
I glued and nailed the bottom board onto the side supports as well as the side supports to each other at the corners. The interior supports are glued 1/2" in from the back, and there is a lot of room toward the front. The building will sit toward the back, and I wanted to leave room for wiring in the front.
I glued the top to the supports (no nails) and left room on the back to insert a removable backer board. I also finished off the back sides with basswood for a cleaner finish. The base is 34 1/2" wide x 16" deep x 4" tall. Yes, it's tall and wide, and I bet you'll never guess why I need a base such as this.
