I use etched metal often but never tried for plants. I'd recomend using spray paint, start with a primer then a nice coat of base color, and last you can brush in extra effects with acrylic paint.

As a guy, I feel I need to comment on how awesome that shield and sword are!  If its a surprise I’ll understand but what are the gold squares for?
