It wants to be this house!

Juliana

Bequette-Ribault house in Ste Germaine, Missouri. Built sometime in the 1780s. One of 5 remaining houses in the USA built with the ancient post-in-soil method of architecture. A perfect real life role-model for my little cottage to emulate!

We've visited this and other period houses in Ste. Genevieve. What struck us about them was the scale of the furnishings. Because the people of that time were much smaller, all of the furniture appeared to be about 3/4 scale. We felt like giants inside, especially Lloyd, who is over 6 feet tall.

I will definitely have to plan a trip to the area to see all these houses I am working on. I've never been there and know nothing about the region, so its a mystery to me why two 18th century Mississippi houses have latched on to me for rehab. This little house (not counting the roof overhang) is about 7.5" X 12" ...and I read that the real life house is about 22' X 36'...so that's a nice ratio. Nothing fancy going into this one, though I'll probably replace the red tin roof with dark wood shingles...unless someone comes along and tells me its a priceless antique which shouldn't be touched... :)

I am very much drawn to this house, but I can't say why. There is just something about it. Maybe because it is old and unique and still very strong and proud to maintain its place in this world. - Or maybe I should stop analyzing and overthinking things and just sit back and enjoy the scene.

Same here, rackey, same here. Whoever said that houses (large and small) "speak" to us is spot on correct. I would never have believed it before, but now I know.
