Future dusty attic

abloom

I'm planning an unfinished garret in one of the upstairs rooms. I tried grain-painting with wood stain to make it look like rough horizontal boards. The window opening will be covered by a brick chimney & little fireplace.

Thats so nice of you. I used a ruler to mark off 1/4" wide boards with a pencil. I used the pencil marks as guidelines while I painted a pattern on each board with a pointed brush. I used 3 shades of semi-transparent wood stain from Home Depot, that I chose to match the "before" picture on their display showing weathered wood before and after staining. Im away from home so dont have the names, but one is almost black, one a very dark cool brown, and one a light silvery grey. I was looking at pictures of wood grain and I tried to make similar patterns, often starting with a dark "knot" and painting lighter wavy lines away from it. For the darkest spots I let a few drops of stain sit on the wood and dry there. It made its own irregular shapes and I just followed them with wavy lines moving outward.
