Drawing siding lines:

I draw the lines in a drawing program then print them out, tape the measured lines to each end of the wall to be sided, then draw connecting guide lines and finally remove the paper strips. The straight-edge I'm using in the photo, I think its called a decking tie, used for brackets / bracing on deck framing. If you use it as a straight-edge for cutting I would glue a piece hard wood as a fence between your fingers and the utility knife - a stick about a 1/2 inch sq. You'll find these ties at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. Just ask for the decking hardware section. They're galvanized metal, they're cheap and they're pretty heavy gauge. They also come in 'L' & 'T' shapes, etc.
