Medieval 519 Posted April 11, 2022 I love my grandkitty but he is no longer allowed in my work room. The first time he went after my roof I saw it and stopped him ASAP. This time I had my back to the dh while I was working at the sewing machine. The noise of him ripping up the foam took a second to register. I loves sinking his claws into the foam roof tiles! The other one is an angel! I think th yellow will need to be replaced. The others...character! Quote Link to comment
chapchap73 1,445 Posted April 12, 2022 You just need to have respect for his vision; he is obviously a great artiste lol 1 Quote Link to comment
Medieval 519 Posted April 12, 2022 Oh yes, he can weather a roof like nobody's business. He's an act of God unto himself! Lol Quote Link to comment
Never2manyShoes 213 Posted July 22, 2022 I've seen a couple tutorials on making "slate" roof tiles out of foam. What kind of foam is being used and where do I get it? I'm assuming the colored edges are exposed foam. Is that painted over after the shingles are in place? Sorry if these are rookie questions but I'm going to attempt a slate roof on my Pierce rehab. I got the foam at the dollar General store. I think they are everywhere. They were 5 pieces in a package for $1 before inflation. Idk what they are now. They have a sticky back. I probably went through 10 packages to cover this house. Maybe a few more. Lessons I learned: put the caulk on the sticky side. If you put it on the foam side, it will separate from the foam later on. Use the spatula to "frost" the foam with the caulk so it is everywhere. Then lightly scrape it, flatmside down, over the caulk while still wet. It gives it a more realistic slate look. Either use all white foam pieces or be ready to paint extra coats on the other foam colors. I still have spots where the color shows faintly through, especially on the edges. I do have a photo posted in this album of the finished roof. Hope that helps. Quote Link to comment

Then I touched up and painted edges after I glued all the pieces to the roof. Also, if I could do it again, I would paint the roof whatever color I'm painting the tiles so the edges where you see tiles overlapping (where the eaves are) blend with the tiles. I had to go back and try to paint under the tiles cause I could see bare wood. Quote Link to comment
