I really wanted rod-iron spindles. I tried tooth picks with beads painted with chalk paint, I cut teeny dowels and glued beads in between the cut dowels. Finally I bought Hobby Lobby spindles and painted them with chalk paint. (My husband uses chalk paint to make metal look like rod-iron in RL.)

The spindles from HL looked the best.
