Ouch! Get those towels off of the stove. Electrical appliances have been known to turn themselves on with a power surge or out of sheer cussedness! 

Not quite understanding " set up a room in a recess between wall and cabinets " -- a real room? the space next to the dishwasher? a mini room?

Edit: Oh, I found the mini dinette set. On my monitor that corner is way too dark to see easily. Had to really squint to see it. 

I have the same fear of electrical stuff surging.  It's in plugged and everyone I walk in the room, I keep moving stuff off the helpers put on it
