Today I started the top floor. This photo shows how tall it's getting. (I should have set it a little straighter before I took the picture though)! This is the last tatami room. It will have a tokonoma like the other tatami rooms. I used pale yellow mulberry paper, with metallic coppery gold flowers on two of the walls. Now that I'm staining the wooden parts that need it while I am visiting my mother, the rooms are coming along much faster.

The two other rooms on this floor are the central hallway, and the room with the irori, or firepit in the center. After that, it will be the porches and their overhangs, then the roof. I understand that the roof is quite an undertaking!

I can't believe I have this much done already!

What are the finished dimensions going to be?  Isn't it over five feet wide when extended? How tall do you expect it to be?

I'm not sure of the finished dimensions, but it is over four feet wide when fully extended, and from the pictures, it looks like roof will be about as high as each storey. Right now, it is roughly two feet high, and 30" wide when closed, so yeah, with the extensions fully open, it will probably be around 60", which is five feet.

It looks like it is taller than two feet, but I just measured it. (I don't have a yardstick or tape measure with me right now, so that was only a rough measurement).

Thank you.  I've been watching your progress and was curious of its finished size.

You've done such beautiful work with the all the construction, the staining and the papers you've chosen.  Although the roof will be quite a task, I am sure you'll do a great job on it as well.
