Playing around with designs here, there will be a first and second ''shelf''' or mantle, the top larger than the first, as in the Highclere Castle fireplace design. I am most likely going to use some childrens toy sheilds in place of the motive between the '' shelves'' and have planned to turn the pillars at an angle, but first need to make the angled cut on the piece supporting the pillar. Initially I have planned to cut the pillar so the first shelf can sit flush with the back.

This is really interesting. Will it be painted when its finished or stained? You have a great imagination for using all of those different trim pieces and putting them together like this. I really like those 3 rosette type pieces above the shelf, to me they seem Tudor~ish.
