I read mystery story once where a tall and very ornate cabinet with tall doors was really the access to a secret passage way. You'd never have guessed it. It was how the murderer snuck into and out of the dining room as the lights flickered on and off - also controlled from within the secret cabinet. ...... Not that you are trying to create a mystery theatre.

Selkie, love the murder mystery aspect!  Those old houses in Charleston are full of mysteries!  So perfect!
