Spiral Staircase

So I've been working on a spiral staircase from the second floor to the attic as I didn't like the idea of a ladder. At first I tried the wooden fan idea as I have seen others do. Even though I joined two pieces together to make them stronger, when I can to drill the holes they still split and broke. So instead I used the wide 'ice-block' sticks which I shortened, sanded and hubby helped me to drill the holes. I then used a left over piece of the sticks and a small piece of the fans to make the risers. I have since painted them white and I'm currently waiting for some copper tube to turn up in order to make the handrail.

This is coming out just lovely. I like the flat step. Seems more logical so your heels don't catch in all the little holes!

As to the handrail, if you are going to install it the direction you show in the picture, could you simply attach it to the wall? You could use beads to run cording or wire through and not deal with posts except maybe for a straight railing at the top opening. Hope I'm making sense.

My 'I-engineer' husband has bought some copper tube which he believes we'll be the ideal handrail.  I have some thicker copper wire for the uprights.  Hopefully this weekend he'll be able to help me sort it!
