Oh, thanks - it's white metal (a soft metal made from shavings sometimes called "paste")

very bendable, but when it's all quick-glued together it's very sturdy. You can also solder these together.

By the way, I purchased two spiral kits from her, she shipped it in the peak of volcanic ash activity over Europe and it eventually arrived safe and sound. -- Sheila
