The Scottish Fireplace

Lynette Smith

At first I was going to go with a pot belly stove, but later thought that a fireplace would be better. It can be difficult packing in a big iron thing on a mule! Besides, Anderson could build the fireplace himself.

I looked in books and on the internet at pictures of fireplaces until I came across a Scottish style fireplace. I objected to the traditional oversized fireplace because I didn't want a wall at the end of the fireplace alone the back, which would cause the house to feel smaller. The open design and the wood were key elements which drew me to this design. Holly suggested some cozy inglenook benches, so I played with a full scale plan of the fireplace until I was pleased with the shape.
