Gun Deck

pdlnpeabody

Deck just below the main open deck.  32 large, 32 lb cannons were held on this deck, along with the officer's quarters.  Each cannon had to be tied to the ship using thick thread.

Magnificent ship Jeremy but must take some building at this scale!.......when did the armament change to 32lb......originally it was specified for 30 x 24lb long guns on the gun deck and 32 lb carronades on the spar deck?

It looks beautiful Jeremy, my husband does boat models too. He's had a few people commission them, and has a few that museums up here in Maine display at times. All that rigging is a pain, he's had me do a lot of it because he has fat fingers! :-D

Thanks!

Mike-  You're probably correct about the gun details.  The data I conveyed was gleaned from the information provided with the kit, however, I noticed several errors early on.  The instruction book claims she was the first ship commissioned by the U.S. Navy, however, other historical sources identify her as the third ship.  I thought "32 pounders" was a bit off.  I wouldn't be surprised if the writers mixed up the number of guns with the size.  More accurate sources point out that the total number of guns varied based on who was commanding and the mission.  When she encountered her first British ship in the Mediterranean before the war of 1812, she only had 42 guns.  Later, she carried as many as 65.  The configuration the kit comes in (and current layout of the real ship) put 32 guns on the gun deck and 23 (mostly carronades) on the spar deck.

Wow! That is really awesome! What a thing it will be to marvel at, and what a memory to make! How do you display one of these?

Thanks!

When I was in my teens, I put them on the top of my dresser until we moved to a house with a fireplace.  Then they went on the mantle.  Our current mantle is too narrow, so I may have to extend the top of it or find another location for it.  Where ever it ends up, it has to stay out of reach of my youngest until she understands the "look, don't touch" rule.

That is always the challenge with little ones around! I think not being able to touch things when you are little is exactly what makes us crazy for little, delicate things when we get older! I love the mantle idea!

I just can't imagine having the patience to build one. I am overwhelmed; thanks for posting the pics. Keep them coming.
