bookshelves I

havanaholly

Next it was time to make the built-in bookshelf to go next to the fireplace at the right. I cut a piece of 1/8" basswood for the back & two pieces for the sides; basswood that thin cuts easily with a utility knife. I cut tongue blade-sized craft sticks for shelves. Next I measured along the sides where I wanted the shelves, laying the side pieces side-by-side & measuring across. Next I used the utility knife to score along the lines and laid one end of the shelp piece along the score line and scored along the other side. Then I took one of my mini carving chisels (from Wal-Mart's craft section before they purged so much of it!) andremoved a 1/16" depth of material from each side piece for each shelf. I made a paper pattern for a fancy top I was going to carve, but it didn't fit in the dry fit, so I tried something else.
