4/17/06, finishing the kit (not everything)

By "not everything" I mean I still have a bedside table and the bathroom to do.

I glued the bed together. I only had to trim one tab on the bed bottom, and the dry fit went OK.

I decided that cherry stain would go best with the rust-colored carpet. I glued the bottom to the back and then glued the sides to the ends of the bottom and the sides of the back. Hunky-dory. Then I glued on the front. Well, the edges of the sides that are supposed to glue to the back of the bed front don't quite fit. The structure, reinforced with masking tape, spent some time in the vise. The tabs on the ends of the bed are slightly longer than 1/8" (like 3+/16") and had to be sanded flat. By forcing the sides to fit properly and sanding the tabs flush with the sides the trim pieces not only fit and look good, but cover the tabs, as well  .

I have some scrap foam for pillows. I cut a "mattress" from the "popcorn" packing foam I keep for such purposes, I had a piece the perfect thickness for a mattress. I cut a piece of one of DH's old handkerchiefs and covered the foam tightly and glued it to the bottom. I'll cut my pillows out and cover them with handkerchief scraps.

I rethought those pictures that come with the kit, heaved a sigh, thought someone else making this kit may not hoard wine bottle labels like I do (HAH! Miniaturists buy & drink wine according to how gorgeous a mini picture the label will make, check out the Clermont vineyard label hanging over the pub's fireplace in the pub album!) and I ought to find some way to "pretty" them up. So out came the colored markers and pencils and by golly, in the frames and on the walls they may not look bad. I sanded all the frames and took one of each shape and dunked them in red mahogany stain, and the other two in golden pecan stain.

I painted clear nail enamel over the clock face and cut it out when dry and glued it to the clock back. I painted the clock front RED!!! and when it was dry I glued it to the clock face. Now I'm waiting for the amber seed bead I superglued to the bottom for a bezel to dry.

I decided at least one of the armchairs needs a footstool (for Reggie to prop his feet on when he reads, since he's porcelain & his knees don't bend, I guess he's farsighted, since his elbows don't bend, either; going to make that 5 PM toddy hard to sip... and that was all the fabric I had left from the tie. I took two more Buttercup window punchouts and cut fabric circles 1/4" larger and gathered the fabric around each punchout and then glued them together. I have four wooden beads to glue on for feet after the circles dry.

I'm thinking of taking another circle and cutting three or four lengths of dowel and covering it with fabric for a bedside table, but I'm also thinking about using some more kit scraps and craft sticks and make a table with a shelf on it.
