3/26/06, kitchen windows

I painted the inside trim for the kitchen bay windows blue. DH had an old blue & white striped shirt I've dressed a few dolls from and I liberated another piece of sleeve to make window shades.

First I cut a "skinny" craft stick the width of the inside of the frame. I also cut two toothpicks the same width. Then I cut the craft stick in half lengthwise.

Since the shirt fabric likes to ravel a tad, I cut it 1/4" wider than the outer width of the frame, which gave me a hem allowance for each side. I basted the first fold on each side and then steam pressed the second fold, and then blind-hemmed each side and pulled the basting stitches (done in a contrasting color).

Then I glued the piece of craft stick to one end of the strip of fabric, on the "wrong" side, and one of the toothpicks to the right side of the other end.

When the ends dried I rolled the craft stick end to the wrong side again until the wood was covered, and glued it again. When it was dry, I turned it to the "right" side and glued it into place. I ran a glue bead along the toothpick and rolled it along the wrong side until the shade was the length I wanted and then I clamped it there to dry in that position.

After a bit of thought I made the second shade the same length.

I'm thinking of making the kitchen sink from polyclay with dowel legs and putting it under the window, but I also need a counter/ cabinet so that may go there...

I had a "come-to-the-Lord meeting" with the schematics sheet and finally located the front interior trim for the front bay windows, so I primed all the front bay interior trims and have begun to paint them white.

I have some lovely white lace for the curtains, which (at the moment) I'm torn between the way DGM had them and the way I think they'd look better in this house, and the latter is winning.
