Making the Attic flooring

I have finished the attic floor. I decided to make the boards wider for the attic. I'm thinking that when the house was built (ie Queen Anne style) the attic was probably for the maids - therefore it wouldn't have had such a fine finish. I do however like the wider boards more than the narrower ones - I like the finish more too. So here is how I did it....

blogentry-62950-0-56557800-1436257626_th I made a template with lines 1 1/2 cms apart so that it was quick to mark the vaneer.
blogentry-62950-0-26875500-1436257629_th I then used a paper cutter to slice the boards. I find that this is far more accurate than trying to cut with a craft knife. When cutting with a craft knife it tends to follow the grain.

blogentry-62950-0-75323500-1436257634_th The first coat of polyurethane tends to soak in so you need to apply a fair bit.

blogentry-62950-0-39410300-1436257647_th And Voila - you have the finished floor. I tried to join the two separate bits of floor but it didn't work as well as I had imagined. Hopefully I will be able to cover this bit up with either roof or furniture!

Before I lay the floor I have to finish the lighting for the second floor. This is the bathroom lighting finished - I'll hide the wall sconce wires with a mirror.

Looks lovely.

Have you firmed up a plan yet for the dormer/skylight and/or wall extension figured out yet as well as the layout of the rooms up there?

Funny - I just pulled apart the kitchen bay!  I didn't have it nicely sitting which was bugging me.  I had to use a craft knife and sand paper to shape things but now it is perfect.  I have stacks of masking tape holding it all together so it will be perfect in the morning!  I've also just finished the second floor lighting so that I can now fit the floors whenever.  I'm starting on the roof of the tower - I have copper coming which I'll roof it with.  Then I can look at how all the roofing sits.  Looking at the instructions (which I just happen to have sitting beside me) it looks as though the kitchen Bay roof is the last section of roof to go on - typical.  So I guess I'll look at the skylights in the large and maybe middle roof sections instead.  You know Selkie, I am so LOVING this whole process!!!  I still get that little thrill internally when I think of doing bits.  This weekend I'm going to pick up my next dollhouse - it's a Chantilly that has been half assembled and painted white but that's it.  It'll be a real challenge as things I would do I may not be able to.  Anyway - I've looked and looked at pre-made windows but I've decided against buying any.  I'll have a go at making them instead.  I'm kinda thinking of a large dormer to sit on top of the kitchen bay to open that room up, and then cutting the roof down around it....

Great job on the floor!  A paper cutter is a fantastic way to cut veneer.  I did flooring years ago and used the craft knife method and as soon as that blade got a little dull...wavy edges.

Thanks Debra.  Yup - exactly the same with me.  I figured it would be cheap enough to order a new blade for the cutter if I blunted it!

Word of caution - the paper cutters break if dropped!!! ... sniffle, sniffle, I just dropped my beloved Fiskars paper cutter (for which I had extra blades) and snapped the corner bracket off  (the part that holds the blade and the paper goes under) Still trying to figure a "fix" to hold it together. sigh ...

I have two paper cutters and a mini guillotine (I used to be a scrap-booker!).  Thank you for that word of caution!!
