Yesterday I punched out all the staircase pieces. Since I have seen how difficult this can be - I was extremely careful and luckily all the pieces came out cleanly!
I have decided to have the treads and handrail stained wood and the rest gloss white. So - after carefully sanding I experimented with wood stain using Mod Podge and chalk pastels. Once I was happy with the colour I stained all the treads and the handrail pieces. Once dry I gave it two coats of gloss polyurethane. I'm really happy with the result! Who needs expensive wood stain!
