More roombox bits and pieces.
I messed around with some basswood and balsa and some spindles and fashioned a little chair; it is a bit wobbly but that's what I like about roomboxes-- everything gets glued down at some point, and I can hide the mistakes! I also made an ottoman because I decided that the lamp table wouldn't be able to hold the chess board very gracefully:
Well the Scottie dog came in, but I didn't look carefully at the dimensions when I was ordering him, and he is much too big!
I'll use the little Scottie on the far left, which I have had for probably about twenty years-- I don't think he is a Hagen-Renaker because I can't find him under that name, so I don't know who made him. He's been missing his tail for some time so I made one from PaperClay.
I found a cheapy frame at a thrift store:
I spray-painted it with some textured beige (it shows up washed-out in these photos though) that I had lying around and it looks alot better. I glued it onto the box with woodglue, and a small slit at the top for the glass to slide in and out; I already got the glass stuck in there (I managed to wiggle it out eventually though) so I am thinking maybe I should replace it with plexiglass...
The chess pieces are arranged in the opening move known as the Queen's Gambit. (Yes, I had to Google that-- I am not that good of a chess player that I knew that already...! ) The board is a magnet, and all the pieces are metal, which is nice in theory but they all get their own little weird magnetic field patterns and attract/repel each other in funny ways so it was a bit stickley arranging them all. I glued them down so they would stay put!
