Taking Shape

It has been 18 months since I started this build, and it is finally starting to take shape. Its frustrating that it took this long to finish the basement, but I have produced a lot for the 1st and 2nd floors, so I'm not as far behind schedule as it would seem. If I could build a floor per year, it would be done in another 2.5 years, but that isn't likely. The updated gallery shows about where I'm at, but I progress every day, so they're always out of date.

I was working on framing of the kitchen and 2nd floor walls, but I re-focused on the basement almost a week ago. I knew I was getting my income tax return and the Ocala show was coming up, so I'm on schedule to have the 1st floor deck installed this weekend (3-20-2010). Adapters for the basement lights was on my list of "items I need but can't afford."

After that is done I will glue the back panel to the right of the basement and the final plywood panel that will make up the base of the west yard/driveway. Next will be to fit and cut 3/8" styrofoam panels to fit around the house. With some sculpting, scenic sand and static flock for grass, I'll have a "yard" framing the house. I also need to install two last pieces of trim to the base and glosscoat it. While glue dries I'll cut studs and spacers for the walls. Most of the studs have been cut and are just waiting to be assembled for the 2nd floor. I built the sub-deck for the 3rd floor and paneled the underside. This part will serve as the 2nd floor's ceiling and will have blocks on the top to "lock" the roof/3rd floor when the two parts are assembled. Having a removeable roof is necessary due to the height of the house. Having a removeable roof will also remove some weight during moves. If I stay on schedule, I should have the entire house framed by the end of April. Of course this will be a dry fit. The different walls will be removeable until they're paneled and permanently attached to the house. I just want to get this part of the build finished and get a few pictures of the whole house in wood frame. Next will be wiring and paneling the 1st floor, followed by making and installing the mahogeny panels in the living room.

I still have to make some decisions. Should I give the house a slate, gravel, or some other kind of driveway? Should I put white or wood stained fireplace mantles in? These are a few of the choices I have, but I don't know which way to go. I'm glad I have far too many other things to do to keep from getting derailed by a few decisions.

With that fabulous breezeway between the utility room and the house, I don't think I could leave out a driveway! Can't wait to see the finished basement. Every time you add pictures to your gallery, it becomes my new favorite part of your house.
