Pennsylvania Dutch Bundling Bed and Cabinet

Lynette Smith

I got these off ebay in July. The sellerthought they were German. I thoughtthey were quaint, that I might make suitable bed linens and resell. Not Happening. When the package arrived the bed had a piece on the head and footboard with a groove for a divider. What I have is a PennsylVania Dutch Bundling Bed.

Bundling was a courting ritual practiced by the PD, the puritans (though I think it was really the pilgrims - they were the profiteers. The pilgrims were the zealots. I have ancestors on both sides. No intermarriages until 1956). A couple would be put to bed with a board between ( or a bloster). Some used bundling bags - each was put into their own bag. Except I read about one enterprising young man you stitched the two bags together! :yikes: Some wore aprons. A new England ballad says:

She is modest, also chaste

While only bare from neck to waist,

And he of boasted freedom sings,

Of all above her apron strings.

Close up showing the slot forthe board in next shot.
