Someone here on GL made a topper that came down and had front legs that folded out for support. It went over a trundle bed and became a flat work surface when the bed was not in use. I think they used an old door. I can't remember whether it hinged on the back wall and latched up on the wall when not in use or if it slid down behind the bed and stored that way. Might be a way to significantly expand your horizontal work space in the same square feet.

Usually the bed is covered with either fabric or minis in work.
