I am still not sure how I was supposed to do the baseboard by the stairs but this way looks fine to me so I don't think I will mess with it any more. The newel post was close to half an inch taller than the posts at the beginning of the stairs. I am not sure why it was like that but it looked strange to me. I cut it to the same height as the other two and am much happier with it.
