Pocket Doors

Jimminy Cricket, if only I knew what I was getting myself into ... I'd have done it anyways. Tutorials were so-so in helpfulness.

First a little history. My house is made with triple-layer foam core. To make a pocket for my door, I left out the middle layer. Well, foam core paper-and-glue-wrapped on one side will warp as the glue dries. I put up the original walls, left a gap for the door, then paper and glued the walls. Both sides warped, making it impossible to slide a door in and out. So, I ripped out one side, put in new track, and paper and glued both sides of the replacement wall section. Worked like a dream.

This room will be the home office.

Pics are ...

1. Ripping down a warped wall.

2 &3. putting in new track.

4. Track made from two sizes of balsa wood.

5. Fitting a new wall section - it's like working with drywall.

6. Leveling the new wall section.

7. Leveled and trimmed.

8. Glue and paper wrapping the wall section

9. Glue and paper wrapped wall section dried and installed.

10. Glue and paper section fixed in with more glue and paper (this makes for a really strong - and light - structure).

11 & 12. Testing. Pocket door in, pocket door out. I went with a traditional shoji screen, paper temporary until my authentic Mulberry paper arrives.

13. A gesso finish before paint and wallpaper. In a day or two I will trim the door and finish the transom.

14. Furniture arriving for the office!

15. The pocket door enters from the hall.
