Finishing the Tub and moving on
Monday June 11, 2012:
I topped off the laundry tub, added some small beads for soap bubbles, and added a puddle of water around the base of the tub.
Switching gears back to the bed, I searched through my lumber stash for parts I could use to make the canopy portion of the bed.
I stained the pieces and gave the bed a second coat of stain.

After staining I cut the trim pieces for the canopy of the bed. After several tries, and with the help of friends on the Greenleaf Dollhouse forum, I finally managed to get the angles correct for the trim. The problem was that the trim pieces point down – but their position on the canopy shows them as “outside” cuts. See photo below:
If you compare the crown trim on the wall with the trim on the bed you can see the difference in direction. The crown on the chimney breast points out and up, and on the bed it points out and down. As I said, it took a while to figure it out, but the result was just to make a regular outside corner cut and then turn it upside down and attach it to the canopy top.
After that I cut off the top portion of the balusters and glued them to the canopy top.
While I waited for that to dry I took the finials that I bought for the bottom legs of the bed and sanded and cut them down to approximate the shape of the bed’s footboard legs.
It’s a good thing that these finials are inexpensive and that they come 10 in a package, because I had 2 failed attempts before I got the look the way I wanted it. It’s pretty close to the look of the real thing. See photo:
This is all I managed to get done today. If I can carve out some time tonight I'll finish sanding the finial legs and give them and the canopy top a coat of stain. But for now I'm off to by some much needed clamps!
