Dry Fit
The dry fit went fairly quickly. Only had to trim a couple of tabs. But it has sat here for a week, waiting for me to decide whether I want to leave it completely white or not. Frustration hit when I made a special trip to Hobby Lobby to get the glue recommended by Andrew and couldn't find any. DH and I discussed it and decided to try glue made for pvc pipe. The type I'm going with after trying it on sample pieces is Oatey, All Purpose Cement for PVC, ABS, CPVC. I did try some Goop, that MiniMadWoman, mentioned in her blog, but I either got a different kind or I did not let it set up long enough (over 2 hours) but it pulled apart on my sample. After a week, the pvc cement is holding well and doesn't appear to have done any damage to the plastic. So that will be what I use. Now if I could just find the right applicator.
I've decided to paint just a bit of the trim. The pure white of this was so nice, but a little color to offset it wouldn't hurt especially since this will be the home of Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. I tried acrylic paint first, and lets just say, I was not a happy camper. I won't go into all the details, but let's just say it took several coats, and then with my impatient self after about 2 hours afterwards, I found out I could scrap it off with my fingernail. I was so afraid that I was going to be the first one to have to report that I had ruined the White Orchid. (Found out later if I had let it sit until morning, the paint would have set up and no problem.) But since this hit me wrong I immediately tried to scrape it all off and guess what-- it did not leave a clean surface. While I frantically was trying to figure out if there was enough scraps to cut new pieces from, DH casually mentions that you can buy spray paint just for plastics and he thinks he has some very close in color to what I was using around here somewhere. DUH, it is not like I did not ask him BEFORE I started and during the process if he thought the paint I was using was ok. Anyhow, I looked and found, a can of Krylon Fusion For Plastic paint. This stuff is great on the White Orchid, covered it in no time (even on the pieces that I hadn't got scraped off) and dried fairly quickly. (It is humid and has rained off and on all day--so although parts of my porch are now blue, the pieces were brought in to dry quicker) Good news, I may still be the first one to ruin the White Orchid, but it is not today. So what do you think of this color?
