Window/door casings on textured wall

I'm a newbie. I'm planning on using a stone texture on my house using egg cartons or paper clay. Can't decide yet.  I've been watching tutorials on the process but don't see the proper steps.  Cover the walls and then add window/door casings or casings first?

Thanks for any help!

I texture the exterior walls of most of my houses, and for the Glencroft pub I also did the interior walls.  It sounds tedious, but I cut blue painter's tape into strips the width of the door and window trims and put them around the openings; I lay pieces of the tape over the window openings to cover the openings so that I have a way to remove the tape after I have applied whatever I use to texture with (usually spackle or joint compound), or let the strips extend below the door openings.  Once I've slathered on the texturing material I let it set up a few minutes before removing the tape.

That sounds like a good idea and not as tedious as trying to put windows in first and then protecting them and working around them when adding the exterior and wall texturing material.  Thanks for that great tip!

I am a total klutz and I tend to zone out and have conversations with the house whilst engaged in tedious prep workmto prevent sloppy disasters.  The house will chat up a storm with you and give you all sorts of inspiration to make things it wants.
