I got the Covid, eek!

I don't know what forum to put this in. Moderator(s) feel free to move it to wherever you feel it belongs. Just giving an update.

I'm recovering from the dreaded Covid-19! I was so careful too, doing everything I was supposed to do: social distancing, wearing a mask, obsessively washing my hands... Fat lot of good it did!

I didn't get any respiratory symptoms but it attacked my heart. Thought I was having a heart attack. Agony. Trip to the hospital, out in a few days, and then a few days after returning home my husband heard a crash in the kitchen. I was overcome by waves of dizziness and thought, "Oh, I should go lie down..." He found me lying amongst broken dishes I'd been putting away when I collapsed.

That resulted in a return to the hospital for nearly a week's stay in the Covid Ward, or what I called the Leper's Tower. Everyone dressed in near haz-mat suits and no visitors. My dear hubs has been more upset about all of this than I, God bless him.

I'm home now but tests have yet to reveal if my heart has suffered any permanent damage. I can't get my left hand to work properly. It won't grip anything. No signs of a stroke though, so that's a blessing. Hoping for full recovery, only time will tell.

Now lots of catching up to do with all of your posts and projects. I'll have to enjoy miniatures vicariously through all of you for a while!

I hadn't heard that neuropathy could be a side effect of this virus.  Thank God you're here to tell about it, Kells.  The hubs and i have been self-quarantining since the second week in March except for trips to the grocery store; now I'm questioning that!

Instacart. I stopped going to the grocery store when the young man bagging my groceries was wearing his mask under his chin. "How effective is that?" I asked. "Oh," he said, "it's too uncomfortable otherwise."  He had no response when I asked him how comfortable he thought a ventilator would be. Half the employees were either unmasked or wearing them improperly that day. I overcame the urge to talk to the manager and instead phoned HQ in another state to report them. It had been my grocery store of choice since I moved here. I'll never know if my call meant anything. I will never go back to find out.

@Kells Hang in there. We are pulling for you. :)  :flowers:

I too have been avoiding going into grocery stores - even if the employees are being good, there are a lot of customers who aren't. And I am in a higher risk group, so I've opted for the pickup option. The employees put together the order, you drive up and get it, paid for online - very little contact, and I don't have to deal with the maskholes in the store.

I hope you will fully recover with no permanent damages. I am very happy that you lived to share your scary yet victorious story. Looks like your husband didn't get it which is good too. Hang in there Kells!

My way to deal with this was that I totally quarantined for the first 3 months. I had my groceries delivered, even though I had to wait days at some points to get them. Once I got the rhythm of the system, I mastered it and never ran out of stuff. The cost was probably worth it because no one so far got sick at home. My husband never stopped working, and some people got sick there but no spread. I have worried so much since day one that nowI am kind of numb. I go now to get my groceries which is the only trip outside of my house that i take, but i don't go as often as before.

Good luck to everybody and please continue to take care!

Thank you all for the kind wishes. I feel great, not sick at all! The left hand is still a concern, though. I can't so much as pick up a spoon. Good thing I'm not left-handed! It is very weird. I can stretch my fingers out and wriggle them, but if I try to pick anything up my hand just says, "I think not."

My husband tested positive for antibodies, which means he had it and never even knew. Pretty sure I got it from him. His job requires public contact, and although he's been careful, that's where it most likely came from. He feels so bad. I reassured him I could just as easily got it from a gas pump.

Okay, so you can all whup me upside the head for not playing this to my advantage. I could totally have used this to guilt-trip him into another dollhouse!

"Oh, Kells, how can I ever make it up to you?"

"Funny you mention. I just happened to be on Craigslist . . ." :cheezy:

So glad you are feeling better and are ok. It must have been so scary. I have mild asthma so I am higher risk so I have been careful and barely going out. I can't wear a mask as it sets off my asthma so I am medically exempt but so far nobody has been abusive about it. That is my big fear. The regular winter flu can knock me flat for almost 4 weeks. Luckily I am living at my parents so my dad does the grocery shops.

I did laugh when you said the above. Yep such a good opportunity :)  who knows you may still have that option.  He must be feeling terrible about it but so glad you are ok.

Kells, I hope your hand comes back. Wait, that didn't come out right. Well, you know what I mean.

I've been all over since the virus started and wearing only a Kleenex over my mouth and nose. It should be a bandana but I haven't been anywhere I could buy one.

I can't wear a mask because I get a panic attack when something is pressing over my mouth. So I've been lucky or I've had the virus and just didn't know it. Which could be the case since I've been to Urgent Care twice and the doctor's office three times (for other things). No places better for picking up the virus!

But I go to the store, the post office, the laundromat, the mechanic's (THREE of them now!), and the only time I've felt under the weather was yesterday, the day after my flu shot. And that was weird because I've never had a flu shot affect me before.

I'm not worried about getting the virus. I AM concerned because it's not over yet. I hate to say it but I think slowing down the virus is just causing it to hang around longer and giving it more time to mutate.

*It's not that try to go out everywhere, but I only have a cooler for a fridge and 3 bags of ice will melt in 3 or 4 days - 2 days if it's really hot. And I have to have a running car and groceries, plus get propane tanks filled.

Kelly, over the years the hubs & I have acquired a few bandannas and those nice, big floppy rubber bands from the Post Office holding our mail.  I fold the bandannas roughly into thirds with a pleat, then put it through two rubber bands and fold in the ends so the bandanna covers our faces and the rubber bands fit over our ears.  I watched the Surgeon General do this on TV with what looked like a teeshirt.

Well, here's a spot of good news. My left hand hasn't improved but I saw a specialist about it. He thinks it's just a pinched nerve in my neck and not permanent damage!! He sees it often after people have been in the hospital. I can believe it. I was trussed up to so many tubes and wires that I could barely move. It was quite uncomfortable, as you can imagine. He wanted to send me to a physical therapist. That may still happen if things don't improve, but in the meantime I opted to just try some exercises and stretches he recommended to try to work things out. Honestly, I am just relieved to hear someone tell me they don't think it's permanent nerve or muscle damage! It's been very worrisome.

I don't know if anyone will read this, but I realize it was pretty awful of me not to give an update of good news when so many people offered such kind thoughts. My hand fully recovered in about three weeks. The exercises worked and I've had no problems since! :D

Covid did not "attack my heart" as I originally stated. It instigated Costochondritis. That's an inflammation of the cartilage which connects your ribs to your sternum. It was awful but I can't complain, considering what the outcome could have been. Fully recovered and looking forward to going to Lisbon this Fall! Fingers crossed the EU stays open.
