Hello everyone.. A Newbie from California!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone I'm Cindy.. Happy (belated) Mother's Day to all the beautiful Mom's. Today I opened my 1st "Greenleaf (Orchid) Dollhouse Kit". I broke 2 windows already, but only because I was so excited. LoL..cough-cough.. :P I wasn't sure if I should use wood-filler or glue? I went with the "Gorilla-Glue" which seemed to workout just fine.. Crosses-fingers & holds-breath! I started a video too, so when the dollhouse is done we can watch it together. :) Ok, tty'all real soon.

Hi Cindy. Welcome to the forum. :)  Be careful what kind of Gorilla glue you use; the original kind swells as it dries.  Wood glue is best for gluing raw wood to raw wood.

Welcome to the little family, Cindy.  I hope you are dry fitting your kit parts together before you glue anything.  If you first put parts together using masking or painter's tape before you glue anything you can shave or sand your slots & tabs for a more perfect fit, you'll get a better idea of how the parts go together and if the order in the instructions works for you, or if you might want or need to change things.

I wish I had known this before using it for a non-mini project (made a chalkboard from an old picture frame)—it really swelled up and leaked out all over the place. I was able to mostly chisel it out but it was not the clean look I was after!

welcome! I’m new here myself!

Quick question: Where is a good place to buy paint?

Many of use paint samples from various paint companies ... Lowe's, Home Depot, Sherwin Williams, etc. The samples are usually a satin finish, which is great for miniatures. (You don't want to use glossy paint as it shows up irregularities in the surfaces, messing up the appearance. The samples are 4-6 oz., plenty for whatever is needed.

Welcome, Cindy!  Everybody's very friendly and helpful here, plus we're really glad that the forum is back up and running!

I'm very happy with the Behr Marquee sample pots I've got from Home Depot.  You can get them in any finish as they are custom-mixed now, so be sure to specify.  I used semi-gloss on the outside of my carpet shop and on the trim inside, with matte for the interior walls.

I've been admiring the Greenleaf dollhouses online for years, but had never been able to justify the expense, until this spring, when the world got cancelled. I live in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada, and for the first couple months of lockdown, you literally couldn't go outside without your face freezing within a minute or two, so I decided I needed a project, and bought the Magnolia. Now I'm hooked! I'll admit I rushed out of excitement and I'm not thrilled with the colour, and I'm just not happy with how it turned out, so I'm giving it to my daughter to play with. I've ordered the Buttercup and intend on doing a much better job. I can't wait for it to arrive.
I should also mention that I am partially colour blind, so I typically can't match colours at the best of times. There's a lot I will do different on my next house.

Hi, I'm Laura. I bought the Coventry Cotrage about ten years ago, started building and then... stopped. But, I've picked it back up again recently now that I have some space and I'm really enjoying it.  I just put in my first bit of wall paper! I'm looking forward to learning all of the things.

      Hello
I'm Jill from Osage Beach, Missouri, originally from Omaha, Nebraska.  I have been looking at these dollhouses for more than ten years.  I originally wanted the Garfield, but it is so big.  Maybe I'll do it as my next house?  So I saw the Lily, love it, but it is also so big.  I decided to make my first house a half scale and I just fell in LOVE with the Fairfield.  I am a perfectionist by nature and I hope it doesn’t drive me crazy trying to get it right.  I love the “Don’t panic!” in the warm-up syllabus.  So I am just going to take my time and enjoy it as intended.  I look forward to seeing what all of you have to say.
Take care in this time of uncertainty, Jill

Hi I'm Rachael from TX. I have wanted a dollhouse my entire life. I am a DIY kind of gal so thought I should start with a kit. What better time than in a quarantine to start a new project? I will definitely be using this sight for much needed research. Thanks so much!

So, I am on day two of my Glencroft build. The second floor went in with much finagling, but now I am dealing with the left side of my house. I've read about some of the problems other people have had with this side. I decided to walk away and start fresh tomorrow. So far it's been fun♡
