Windows and Mirrors

Hi friends, 

 

I'm looking for a source where I can get custom cut glass and mirrors for my dollhouse. I'd rather use the real materials than foil or plastic.

Try a local glass cutter?  I'd be curious to know what the cost would be, or if they would be willing to do a small job?

The IGMA may have a source as well.

Glass cutting is not rocket science. All it takes is a steady hand, a light touch, and a little practice. You can do this yourself with a Dollar Store mirror and a $2 glass cutter.

Particularly  if it's glass thin enough to work for 1:12 scale.

Yeah I get a 3 pack of 8x10 frames from walmart for less than $5.  Has nice thin glass.

I saw some thin glass on alibaba.

And although it is not rocket science, I would do some research beforehand. I have cut myself plenty of times just removing the glass from a picture frame.

I would invest in a pair of properly fitting thin leather gloves to help hold the glass still whilst scoring it.

Cotton garden gloves would be all the protection you'd need and are much less expensive than leather, but really, you don't need gloves.

Put the mirror on a piece of cloth -- terrycloth, felt, flannel -- and it won't move. And if it does move, you've pressed waaaay too hard with the cutter.

Score from edge to edge. You can't cut shapes out of glass like paper with scissors. [Find small round mirrors at a craft store.]

All it needs is a light scoring, then grasp the mirror on either side of the score and snap it. Or put it at the edge of a table or block of wood and press iightly to snap it.

Pay attention!  Kathie used to work in stained glass.
