Thimble Hall Posted December 14, 2017 Share Posted December 14, 2017 I have a relative who has asked me to find her about soap making stuff, he has never made it before and wants to her and I don't have a clue . Can someone recommend any specific books that they have used or ones to avoid, and any advice about supplies please. I have looked at books on Amazon and ebay and there are tons. Felthen Posted December 15, 2017 Share Posted December 15, 2017 (edited) I did a tiny bit of soapmaking, sort of, last year. I only used the melt and pour bricks purchased on amazon. You chip them into a measuring cup, melt in the microwave and pour into molds. Kind of cheating but they had some wonderful "soap bases" of natural goats milk, honey glycerin etc. and it was very easy and no fail. What made the soap special though were the wonderful molds. I found them on amazon also ( I would link to them but I don't know how) there were many many different ones flowers and birds, leaves and flower fairies, just lovely detailed artistic soap molds. They were made of silicon and food safe as well. I would have done chocolate but I am of an age that none of my friends would have eaten it anyway and they will use soap. They sell essential oils, carrier oils, botanical extracts, and stuff for soap, bath treats, etc. I'm pretty sure they have a Canadian and a US web store. Tell your relative to go to Brambleberry.com for scents/oil - there is a link there to a blog from Mary (the soap "queen" who knows her stuff. There is tons of blogs and forums - I'd advise reading a bit first. Tell her it is easy to go overboard with ingredients (like with minis) and to maybe start simple. She can buy stuff for her first soap in grocery stores (coconut oil for foam, sunflower oil, lard (for foam) and olive oil and use essential oils. the lye is the only thing I would buy from a dealer to get cosmetic grade.
