This looks really charming and folksy and scratch built at first glance, but then I could see the tabs and slots...what kit is hiding underneath all the faux-tramp art details/folksy trim? Is it an Orchid? I rather like the monotone windows-shutters-walls idea.

OKay - I LOVE that shop kit you are looking at - it is adorable!!!!

I asked a similar question about these cheap kits and got some good replies. The best was a reminder that most of them are half-scale - something I totally overlooked in the description! But I like half-scale and smaller, so that is fine by me.

Reviews were split - someone said their kit was nicely done and went together well - especially for that price. Another person said their kit (travel trailer) was cheap and splintery and they didn't like it.

I think for the price, it might be fine to get one and figure it out.

I am considering this room kit:

And for some reason, this one:

I like this house, too:

- and if I get it, I will thoroughly review it with photos of before and after!! Someone needs to do that (or send me a link where someone already did that!).

I think that's an old Arrow Cape Cod kit.

looks like it is going to be taken

This is a rare dollhouse, beautiful window frames, already looks like perfect for a high end restaurant or store, needs a lot work but it is FREE!!!!!

That's a beauty. Rehabs are not my thing, but if I lived in Chicago I might have to go look at this house.

From what I've seen, there's "four" sections that can stand alone or be connected each other to form a huge house. They're decorated inside and out. I would love to get one, but I'd like to get the whole thing and all four pieces sold together are a little pricy.

And you're welcome for the ID of the Arrow house! But remember, I've only seen these houses a million times. So there's nothing special about remembering any of them.

I too want the whole thing. With a little research, I see some are listed as 1:14. Interesting. I wish they did a 1:48 version for less...I like 1:48 these days and cardstock is sturdier in the smaller houses. I found them on a "Best of Russia" e-commerce site for $36 apiece. I should take a closer look. I prefer ebay for things like that, though. I just really want to see "real pics" from a dollhouse person, but no dice yet.

I have seen the houses a million times, too - but I never remember them like you do. I like how that Arrow was decorated. Very charming.

Gosh! I felt bad thinking of selling mine for $200!  It's jaw dropping what some dollhouses sell for. More amazing how well done they are.

Well, here you have the same house (needs updates) for $75  https://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/art/5713305033.html

And another one (also needs updates) for $150 https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/art/5712989753.html

You can update this 2 and still have lots of $ left over with the $1,700

Just because a house is listed for a high price doesn't mean it will sell at that price.

it looks a lot  better with the windows right side up.  For $1700 you'd think they'd finish the inside.

Exactly!  This seller is new to eBay and has no idea about pricing. When am interested in buying something on eBay, I also look at the seller, their history, their ratings, especially if it's a high price item.  Gotta do your due diligence.

This has a nice look: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Huge-9-Room-CUSTOM-BUILT-Doll-House-/262567058030?hash=item3d22375a6e:g:Wp4AAOSwZVlXppLT

I've been putting off finishing the tower roofs on my Victorianna because I don't really like the look of them. In this house I like what's been done with both of the bay windows -- the tower roof is the shape of a Hershey's Kiss and the other side has had a dormer added to it. I wonder if I could copy these for the two sides of my Victorianna.

What could I use to make a tower roof that shape? Is that something that could be made on a lathe? (My dad has a lathe...)

To add a dormer like that I'd need to cut off the top part of the tower walls and I don't know if I trust myself to do that at this point (here's the current state of it, but the roof's not glued on yet). My husband could probably do it for me with a power tool. I haven't done the hardwood floors there yet so any scars from the blade would get covered up...

When I was building the McKinley I cut the tower roof pieces so that they came to a point at the top, and I used a funnel as a form to hold the pieces in place while the glue set. Worked like a charm :)

Emily, what about cutting your onion dome roof supports from mat board and glue several thicknesses together for each strut, and cover them with poster board sections as a base for your shingles?
