What does '40 MA' mean for a dollhouse electrical system?

I've been looking for a very small motor to use for making my tiny dollhouse carousel revolve.  I've found a few on eBay that have the low RPM (revolutions per minute) and can be operated on 12 volts.  But I'm concerned about that.  And they list an 'MA' and I don't know what that means.  Is it safe to use a little motor with a variable voltage?  These little motors list 4V,6V,12V - so is that safe to use.  Or does it need to be a motor specifically purposed for dollhouse use?

Thank you SO much Mike.  I didn't want to blow up the entire electrical system.  I wish the dollhouse supply companies had little motors specifically designed for these smaller usages.
