I like basswood for those reasons, plus the grain is fine enough to work in 1:12; not that it would matter under paint, for floors or quarter-sawn.

Basswood that is a carving wood isn't it - And a very good wood to work also - I just might have to give that a try.., You mention Quarter sawn - Love Quartersawn White Oak - Do most of my furniture out of it..

Oh, oh, what have I unleashed?lol I like the poplar square stripwood I get at Lowes for turning mini furniture legs, and basswood for the flat pieces. It's how I did this kitchen table.

That is really neat - Turning is one thing I have not got into (YET) I'v been toying with the idea of a pen turning lathe, I do like this smaller stuff as it's getting harder for me to handle large wood and in time won't be able to do that as much so this will fill that void nicely..

Working on some more windows and rough cut the treads for the stairs - Now design a banister ...

Ken, your upgrades look wonderful! Replacing the trim pieces with nicer wood is the way to go, you end up with a much classier result and less prep work to make the trim look nice. I think your house is going to be gorgeous. Can't wait to see more. :)

Thanks Emily - I sure hope so - I do think the wood will as you say finish better + sharper edges and easier to finish..

So will you make working sash windows?

No Holly - I'm just going to use the silkscreened window inserts that came with the kit on this one - Being the first one - I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing and have to sit back and really plan the next step. Maybe down the road a bit I might venture off into uncharteded waters. LOL

I am using this as a learning experience .. It is going to be given to a gal at work as a surprise, She does so much for people in her comunity a very giving person and always talks about always wanting a Doll House .. So this will be it..

More progress - Been tinkering around this week and thinking about windows and how I wanted to do them, The kit inserts laying on the wall is OK but it sets the window all the way back in the window space.. I thunk and thunk about it and came up with this - I used the window trim I already made added a 1/16" strip to the inside front edge on all trim pieces - Then cut the window insert to fit opening - This puts the insert in the middle of the opening - Will do the same for the interior trim which will incase the insert.. Hope that made some sort of sense. :groan:

Then I started thunking again - And decided to eliminate the side Bay windows ,will fill in this space add two windows up higher, Which will allow me to add some built in for the kitchen and a sink in front of the windows.. Make sense ??? LOL

Makes sense to me. I put the kitchen in the like with the bay in front and put a table and chairs and made it a dinette; I made the other side a parlor and put a windowseat in that bay.

Holly - I think I saw that one on this site somewhere - Or one like it anway !! There are so many way to go with these things - That's what I'm starting to enjoy about this.. I can just let my creative juices flow and can't be wrong for a change LOL

A pretty good week-end of progress - Almost finished with the external trim on the windows - Last 2 working on now front bay windows.. Added a new porch roof line - This will be shingled. And added a new roof line to the front bay windows this will also be shingled - Sheathed the inside rightside inside wall - Will figure on what sized window I will build for this area. I do know it will be 4" up from floor to allow for a sink - Will fill in the outside also.

The Westville was the first house I ever sided; it was the house I learned (after the fact) to traces around the window and door trims and butt the siding to the trims. It's our worst blunders that become our best opportunities to learn how not to.

The weekend is here weeeeeeeee ! Have been tinkering all week in the evenings with little stuff mainly adding trim to the front bay window - And working on some neat ideas for the rooms walls and floors.. Today I filled in the hole where the other bay window would have been and build a window ! Then realized it was screaming for a window planter - 10 minutes later wala !! will attah it after siding..

Well I thought I could add a few pics - But can't edit last post once you leave.. So anyway - A few pics of the front bay window all ready for final sanding then seal and sand again - Will be ready for paint then.. Added edging around new porch roof, The porch will be redesigned somewhat as I go along.
