fov
Today I went to Joann's to look for the daisy lace Otterine uses for afghans (tutorial here). Unfortunately they didn't have what I was looking for but they did have samples of designer upholstery fabric on sale for $2 each. Each piece is about 18" square -- plenty big for minis! The first three I grabbed seemed like they'd make good carpet. Compare that to $15 for Minigraphics. The others seem good for furniture, so hopefully they're not too thick. It's hard to tell in the picture but second from the left in the photo below has a leather texture. The striped one next to it could work for a rug. There was tons more than this, but I had to pace myself. I also got some fabric in the remnants section to re-upholster a chair I pulled apart recently. The remnants were 50% off so it was cheap, too.
otterine
I love sample sales and remnant bins! Did they not have the lace at all or just not the colors you wanted? I know it's a fairly limited range.
LindaC
At a Salvation Army a couple weeks ago I found upholstery sample booklets but no baby blues. Only dark colors and stripes. probably .50cents a book or less. Found 4 little owls for my lake scene so I was happy.
fov
Did they not have the lace at all or just not the colors you wanted? They only had white with pink centers and it was kind of expensive ($3.49/yard). I bought 2 yards, which probably isn't enough for the size you showed on your blog, but I could make a child-sized blanket with it. Assuming it's easy as it looks, I found some other colors online for a better price.
otterine
That's about right for price. The stores by me usually have the basic colors on the large plastic reels where you buy the lace by the yard. They also carry individual cardboard reels with 6FT wound on them...these you buy as is and there are more colors to choose from. I haven't looked in awhile, so I'm not sure my local ones carry those anymore either. It just takes time and patience, but it's pretty straightforward work. Good luck!
