CourtofGypsies
Howdy. I've just revamped a little roombox I found in a junk shop. I am totally addicted to these little projects now. I would love to know if anyone recognizes this...if it is a kit or what and if so, is it still available to purchase? pic below. I re-papered the inside and added an extension on the floor and then put in some 'tile' linoleum. I made the little goodies and tea boxes and teapot, sugar and creamer. The scale is not 1:12 nor is it 1:6...lol, somewhere in between but fits my little dollies.
havanaholly
You bjd looks right at home. I think the roombox kits I've seen in the HBS catalog are 1:12; anyone know if there are other sizes? I hit the thrift stores for little curios and also save the Wild Turkey gift boxes. A wooden cigar box would make a nice smaller scale roombox. I've also used an ornamental birdcage (not made to house a bird).
Minis Over The Hill
She is adorable and your roombox is terrific. What kind of doll is she? I've seen a lot of these type roomboxes on ebay.
CourtofGypsies
Thank you! My doll is a resin ball jointed doll. She was created by Bluefairy International. That little sweetie is Yoko. I don't think she's available any longer. I am crazy about the tiny BJDs. I have others that are even smaller than her and then some that are larger. Most of my babies came to me secondhand but I don't mind Thank you for the info on the roomboxes. I will keep my eyes peeled at ebay. Oh and I have a newbie question...what/who is HBS? *blushing*
CourtofGypsies
hmmm...thought maybe I should clarify. I'm pretty sure this roombox IS 1:12 scale. I just don't always follow 'rules' hehehe and was determined to use it for this size doll.

Caseymini
Daphne, do you know about Foamcore board? You can purchase it just about anywhere these days. Even Walmart carries it. The little structure would be easy to reproduce with that. All you would have to do is take the measurments from the original and cut it out with an exacto knife. Then you would glue the pieces together. You could either make your own window frames from mat board or buy finished ones from HBS. They also sell shingles and other accessories. Good job on this one!! Really cute!
Minis Over The Hill
I don't know how other people do it, but I have never been able to cut foamcore decently without a special foamcore cutter.
Caseymini
Joane, it takes a brand new blade, a good steel, cork backed ruler and don't try to do it in one pass. The initial cut should only break the top surface. The second pass should cut through the foam and the third pass cuts the other side. In order to make a straight cut, you have to be standing up and drawing the blade towards yourself. Your body should be directly over the cut. If you are to either side you will get a slant. I hope this helps. It does take a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it, you should get a pretty straight cut every time.
Kabrina
I have a woodburning tool I got from Wal-mart in the craft department for around 9.00. Iit has a LOT of different attachements but my main joy was it comes with exacto blades. So to get the foamcore to cut with nice smooth lines and no flaking of the foamy center I use that. Wait till it's nice and hot and it cuts easily through the top and bottom layers and the center foam is sliced like soft butter. I won't ever be cutting foamcore without it again. The edges come out really nice this way. Good luck!
Minis Over The Hill
Wonderful ideas for cutting foamcore. Thank you for these suggestions. My foamcore cutter cost me $16 and they had no replacement blades when it got dull, so this is very good news.
rackey
I didn't see the original junk shop purchase, but I love what you did to the place. I don't think the doll minds what scale this is in, as she looks perfect in her little get-away. Also, I love the little flags, as they always reminded me of a fairground. havanaholly
I use a brand new blade in my utility knife each time I cut foam core; no crumbling. Casey's absolutely riight on how to get a straight cut.
CourtofGypsies
Thanks everyone! I did look at the sites you linked up but didn't see this particular kit. I did think about foam core and don't mind using it for my own 'toys' lol, but I want to be able to sell the little finished roomboxes. I will make a pattern from this one, not exact but something similar to it that can be cut from wood. Love the idea of the heated exacto for the foamcore!! I will have to see if I can find one of those. I do have a mini iron thing that looks like a soldering iron but has different attachments...no exacto blade though...wonder if I could find one that would fit?
