Chris P.
I have interior latex semi gloss here and I also have oil based Kilz primer. Since it is winter, I would prefer to use the latex base, if it would work. What are the pros and cons of either. I thought I was ready to prime, but I guess I need a little more info. Thanks, Chris

havanaholly
Gesso isn't a brand, it's a type of paint that has plaster of Paris in it and is used primarily to size artists' canvasses prior to painting pictures. It makes a lovely primer, because it can be sanded smooth. I prefer to use flat white interior latex paint for a primer, since I prefer the soap & water clean up and it preserves the life of my brushes, some of which I've been using for fifteen years. MerriMagic
I use gesso on wood products, and Kilz oil based primer on MDF, because MDF is made with formaldehyde as one of it's components. That stuff is deadly. My grandmother was a mortician, and she died of throat cancer, and they were pretty sure that was the cause, since she didn't smoke. MDF gives off a gas..and although it may be a small amount, we're exposed to all sorts of non natural stuff in our environment..and the end result is cumulative. It all adds up..so I'll get rid of any chemical gassing wherever I can. I had thought that non oil primers were ok..but I've been doing some reading and nothing is as effective in stopping MDF from gassing, as an oli based primer. Gesso is GREAT for wood tho..it has a 'sticky' quality which grabs paint..and the acrylic can be ordered in black, if you don't like white.
